The Hulk is a first for many comic readers. When I was a kid there was a cartoon and a live action show. Everyone can connect with the “man inside the monster” story on some level, and being able to throw a car into space is pretty cool too. Continue reading

‘Lost in the Longbox’ Ep.27: ‘Plunge Into the Depths…’

LostInTheLongbox-logo-2“Plunge Into the Depths of Despair”
(The Print Mint, 1969)

Written & Drawn by Robert Crumb

It’s hard to imagine how art can affect a person.  Some can look at a Picasso and are inspired while others see Dr. Who Season 5, Ep. 10 “Vincent and the Doctor” and weep uncontrollably.  (I don’t remember openly crying, but dang…one of my favorite episodes, and tears may have gathered in the corners of my eyes.)  For me the finished product is always amazing, no matter the artist, medium, or work. Writer – Peter David
Penciler – Jeff Purvi
Inker – Terry Austin
Letterer – Joe Rosen
Colorist – Petra Scotese

Greetings from the Wasteland,

In 1988 I was 10 years old. By that point I had seen some of the great fights in the world of comic books and film. King Kong vs. Godzilla, Darth Vader vs. Luke Skywalker, Indiana Jones vs. the Third Reich. But none of these would rival the constantly revolving fight in the Marvel universe. The title bout which would decide finally, who is the strongest…Grey vs. Spiky. Continue reading

Greetings from the Wasteland!

The Thing, to my knowledge, is the only member of the original Fantastic Four to ever have a solo book. This is the last of that run, which started with John Byrne and elaborated Continue reading

Inker – Bill Reinhold
Letterer – Bob Lappan
Colorist – Noelle Giddings

Greetings from the Wasteland!

You can’t love every old book. Some just aren’t that good, no matter how much you may have loved it at the time, there are so many books that were throw offs, that didn’t work, and some that were just plain bad. Continue reading

Letters by Joe Rosen

Greetings from the Wasteland!

Nothing brings that warm holiday feeling to your heart like the smell of fresh-baked cookies, a warm cup of coffee, and the slightly musty odor of an old comic, pulled freshly from its companions and brought to the counter, money in hand to add it to your own personal stash. Continue reading

(Marvel Comics, 1989)

Writer – Danny Fingeroth
Penciler – Ron Lim
Inker – Keith Williams
Colorist – Tom Vincent
Letterer – Gary Fields

Greetings from the Wasteland!

I discovered Marvel’s What If…? series with this issue. It spawned a love of the Watcher, the most benign character in the Marvel U. These books took the main plotlines in the Marvel Universe and retold them with another, usually darker, ending. Continue reading

Greetings from the Wasteland!

There are names in the history of comics that will forever be lauded. Lee, Kirby, Schuster, Kane…and so many more helped to form the foundation of the industry, as we know it today. But atop that foundation there must be a structure, and others moved in to build on it. Continue reading

Greetings from the Wasteland

Caution! In order to carefully describe the events herein, I’m going to have to spoil the hell out of a couple of storylines. Fortunately, these are stories that took place in 1989, so if you haven’t read them yet, it shouldn’t affect you too much. Continue reading

Letters – Todd Klein

Greetings from the Wasteland!

Detective Comics, before the New 52 re-launch, was one of the two longest running comics series without renumbering.  With that longevity comes a mix of feelings.  Can a series stay fresh when looking at a 700-plus issue run? Continue reading

‘Lost in the Longbox’ with Brad Gischia, Episode 15

“Luke Cage: Hero For Hire” #1
(Marvel Comics, 1972)

Written by Archie Goodwin
Drawn by George Tuska

Greetings from the Wasteland!

I often think the greatest trick a comic writer can pull, aside from creating a new and exciting character, is to re-create an old character, make them viable in today’s market and more importantly, in their own comic universe. One such character is Luke Cage, Power Man. Continue reading

Written by: Alan Grant & John Wagner
Art: Cam Kennedy
Color: Digital Chameleon
Lettered: Ken Bruzenak

Greetings from the Wasteland!

There are few characters in comics who could claim to be more morally driven than Batman.  His vow never to kill ranks him above most heroes, and his spurning of firearms (with a few exceptions) make him a model for heroes everywhere. Continue reading

Greetings from the Wasteland!
