I was out of breath by the time I reached the final page of Black Science #1, exhausted and elated I had just experienced sequential storytelling perfection.  Rick Remender, Matteo Scalera and Dean White have created Continue reading

REVIEW: “Batman: the Dark Knight” #25

(DC Comics, 2013)

Review by Zakk Saam

Written by Gregg Hurwitz
Artwork by Alex Maleev
Color Artwork by Dave McCaig
Lettering by Carlos M. Mangual

Clayface is back in Batman: The Dark Knight #25. While there seems to be an influx of Clayface stories in the past six months, this is one of the better ones in my opinion. In a story carefully crafted by Gregg Hurwitz (Vengeance of the Moon Knight, Penguin: Pain and Prejudice), Clayface has broken out of Arkham Asylum Continue reading

(Marvel Comics, 2013)

Review by Kenneth Kimbrough

Writer: Dan Slott & Christos Gage
Pencils: Humberto Ramos
Inks: Victor Olazaba
Colors: Edgar Delgado
Letters: Chris Eliopoulos

It can sometimes be difficult to gauge the quality of a story arc from its first issue. If I were to make a list of things I’m sad we didn’t see in the inaugural meeting between Flash Thompson in the Venom identity and his hero, Spider-Man, then those very things could happen in the next issue. Continue reading

*Spoilers…but moderately

My experience with Kickstarted projects has up to this point been extraordinarily positive. I haven’t come across any comics that I thought didn’t deserve the support they got, financially or otherwise, so it was no surprise Continue reading

REVIEW: “Longshot Saves the Marvel Universe” #2

(Marvel Comics, 2013)

Review by Shawn Warner

Written by Christopher Hastings
Artwork by Jacopo Camagni
Cory Artwork by Matt Milla

I was so pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the first issue of this mini-series that I requested to review #2 and after reading it, boy am I sorry I did. It seems that everything I liked so much about the first issue has dissipated and what remains is an inconsistent story with awkward looking art that at times borders on amateurish try-out level pages. Continue reading

FILM REVIEW: “Hunger Games: Catching Fire”

Review by Kenneth Kimbrough

Directed by Francis Lawrence
Written by Simon Beaufoy, Michael Arndt, and Suzanne Collins
Music by James Newton Howard
Cinematography by Jo Willems
Film Editing by Alan Edward Bell

Note: I have not read any of Suzanne Collins’s books. This review pertains to the film and to the film alone.

At first, it was difficult to swallow the idea of a second Hunger Games film, even though I knew it was based on a series of books from author Suzanne Collins. Continue reading

REVIEW: “Harley Quinn” #0

(DC Comics, 2013)

Review by Shawn Warner

Written by Jim Palmiotti, Amanda Conner
Artwork by Various

Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti don’t just break the fourth wall in this issue, they obliterate it! However it’s all in good fun and it goes miles in restoring some of the humor that the New 52 re-invention of Harley Quinn has leached from the sometimes silly sidekick of Mistah J. Continue reading

REVIEW: “Superior Spider-Man” Annual #1

(Marvel Comics, 2013)

Review by Kenneth Kimbrough

Writer: Christos Gage
Pencils and Colors: Javier Rodriguez
Inks: Alvaro Lopez
Letters: Chris Eliopoulos

Now that’s more like it! As of late, my complaint with the Superior Spider-Man is that I haven’t felt very much drama in the books. The superhero battles tend to be one-sided in favor of Spider-Ock, and the beats among his supporting cast aren’t given enough room to breathe. Continue reading

REVIEW: “Wake” #5

(DC/Vertigo Comics, 2013)

Review by Zakk Saam

Written by Scott Snyder
Artwork by Sean Murphy
Color Artwork by Matt Hollingsworth
Letters by Jared K. Fletcher

The end of one story, and the beginning of another. That’s what you get in The Wake #5, the bimonthly mini-series from Vertigo comics. As always, this issue comes from the creative team of Scott Snyder (Batman, American Vampire) and artist Sean Murphy (Punk Rock Jesus). Continue reading

REVIEW: “Afterlife With Archie” #2

(Archie Comics, 2013)

Review by Shawn Warner

Written by Roberto Aquirre-Sacasa
Artwork by Francesco Francavilla
Lettering by Jack Morelli

Let me preface this review by saying that the first issue of this series was the very first Archie comic book I have ever read. I always thought of Archie and his Riverdale gang as a sort of Happy Days meets Saved by the Bell teeny-bopping high school romance thing, just something I would never in a million years have any interest in reading. Continue reading

REVIEW: “Saltire” Volume 1

(Diamondsteel Comics, 2013)

Review by Brad Gischia

Created by John Ferguson
Art by Tone Julskjaer & Gary Welsh
Cover by Jim Devlin

One of the core ideas of the comics world, especially that of the Marvel U, is the insistence that heroes can come from anywhere. One of the key points that made me fall in love with the X-Men was that they were a truly international group, with members coming from countries across the globe. And I always wondered…could they manage to survive in a book of their own? Continue reading

REVIEW: “Prime-8s”

(Monkeybrain Comics, 2013)

Review by Brad Gischia

Written by Micheal Moreci & Steve Seeley
Artwork by Kyle Latino

Little to no spoilers, other than awesomeness…(but you already knew that)

I’ve come to expect great things from the Moreci/Seeley camp. With their premiere of Hoaxhunters last year and its continued success they have proven that they have comic chops. Continue reading
