Review: Scooby-Doo! Team-Up feat. The Super Friends FCBD Issue

(DC Comics 2015)

 Writer: Sholly Fisch

Illustrator: Dario Brizuela

Colorer: Franco Riesco

Letterer: Sadia Temofonte

Summary: In the hall of Justice the Super-Friends call upon the Scooby Gang to help them solve the mystery of seven rainbow colored ghosts haunting their base. The Ghosts have gotten rid of Superman, and one by one the heroes find themselves being picked off. What shall the Scooby Gang do?!

Review: This story serves as preview for the OGN DC recently put out featuring these two titanic teams teaming-up to save the day. While it is a fun little story in itself, ultimately the question becomes does it make the reader want to go pick up the full OGN?

In short, yes it does. The original essence of the Super Friends is kept with just a bit of updating done to keep them speaking and looking relevant. But if you watched the original cartoon, you’ll feel right at home here. Likewise with the Scooby Gang, they’re updated just a tiny bit but it feels just like the original cartoon. Bringing these two teams together feels natural within the story, and it’s actually a lot of fun.

The ending also takes a surprising turn that puts this as one of those previews that actually works. Do I wish it were a full story on its own? Of course, but its not bad for what it is. It’s also a whole heckuva lot of fun to see these Scooby Gang dress up as the Wonder Twins and other junior members of the Super Friends. I think that was my favorite part.

The art is really nice, smooth and rather cartoony. It fits the looks of these characters to a T, and the colors are bright and inviting. This is a really good story to pick up for your kids on FCBD to get them interested in not only what your grew up with, but show them what they can grow up with.

 I recommend this.

Teen Titans GO! (FCBD 2015)

 DC Comics

 Writer: Merril Hagan

Illustrator: Jorge Corona

Colorer: Jeremy Lawson

Letterer: Wes Abbott

Summary: It’s a girl’s night in as Starfire, Raven, Bumblebee and Jinx have a slumber party. The guys are kicked out and left to their own devices, what ensues are wild hijnks and kid friendly fun you’d expect from the Teen Titans.

Review: Unlike Scooby-Doo, this ended up being a complete story, which I enjoy very much. A lot of people didn’t like when DC came out with Teen Titans GO!, keeping the spirit of the animated team most from my generation grew up with, yet making them more chibi and kid friendly. I personally never had a problem with it, I felt the stories of those original characters was ended well, and if this kept the spirit alive, then I’m all for that. But is this story really any good?

Well, honestly yeah, it’s just a lot of fun. It’s not complex, but it’s not boring in the slightest. Like I said, the spirit of the original characters is there, just in smaller bodies. We get to see Raven partake in some dancing, and Starfire attempt to get her ear pierced. Cyborg and Beast Boy go bowling – with a few cameos in there from some great DC characters – and Robin, well Robin I can’t spoil.

This is a fun, kid-friendly comic, and it comes latched onto the flip side of the Scooby-Doo story, so if you end up getting that, I say give this a try too. If anything, it is a complete story.

Final Score: 3.5 Mix-Matched Slumber Party Weddings out of 5
