REVIEW: ‘Smorgasbord Squad’ #1

(Not So Super Comics, 2014)

By: Nyemb Wood and Miller Jackson

Okay, reader, this review is going to be short this week, because honestly; I have no idea what to make of this comic. Not only that, but I really don’t know what to think of the story line, or even if it has one.  So with that, lets begin.

The comic first starts out in a perfect suburb where everyone is happy until the H.U.N.G.E.R. Pack (Hairy Unfriendly Nefariously Gastly Evil Regime) takes all their food, and the people freak out. I originally took this as a metaphor for the way people never appreciate what they have until it’s gone. I thought the rest of the comic would be a fun and silly way to get a deeper meaning across to people, however, that’s not what happened. And if that’s what was meant to happen, then in my opinion it was not successful. All of a sudden a “superhero” team is called in to save the day. The team is made up of people in food costumes. There is Tina – apple, Tamale – tamale, Spin – spinach, weird mutant looking living food, and their leader Sir Bacon – bacon. Together, they are the Smorgasbord Squad, and it is their job to stop the H.U.N.G.E.R. Pact. The Smorgasbord Squad travels to the facility where the H.U.N.G.E.R. Pact operate, only to discover that the Pact members are in flying saucers turning everyone into zombies that want to eat the Squad. That particular story line ends and goes into how the mutant living food beings were created and why… and it only gets stranger from there.  By the time I finished this comic all I could say was “What the…” and I’m still saying that five reads and three days latter.

And with that, reader, I’m calling it a wrap. I still would recommend to go and read the comic yourself, because it’s definitely one of those comics that everyone takes a little something different from. So good luck and have some fun with it. Until next time, reader. Until next time.
