Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special Preview

The long wait is almost over. After months of anticipation, Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary is now open us.  On this episode of Whovian By Design I will briefly summarize everything we (I) know about the upcoming Day of the Doctor episode. I will also include my personal theories on the upcoming events of the episode.

What we know:

  • As was seen in The Night of the Doctor, when The 8th Doctor (Paul McGann) died he did not regenerate into the 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston). He in fact chose to become the War Doctor (John Hurt).

  • Due to the events of The Night of the Doctor, The War Doctor (John Hurt) is now canonically the Doctor that fought in the Time War prior to regenerating into the 9th Doctor. It was previously thought that the 8th Doctor filled this role.

Theories:

  • Present Day’ 11th Doctor (Matt Smith) and Clara Oswald will encounter ‘Past’ 10th Doctor (David Tennant) and Rose Tyler somewhere between the events of “The Christmas Invasion” and “Doomsday”. This theory comes form the observation that the 10th Doctor appears to still be traveling with Rose Tyler when he encounters the 11th.

  • The Encounter between the 11th and the 10th will be caused by some external force trying to alter the conclusion of the “Last Great Time War.” This comes form the new fact John Hurt’s Doctor was confirmed as the ‘War Doctor’ and thus he can only be encountered in a living state by traveling to the Time War.

  • The External Force that will bring all three Doctors together will be a returning foe that we have yet to see in Moffat’s Doctor Who. This theory comes from the fact that the Day of the Doctor has been hinted to be a ‘love letter’ to Whovians. The Master? Davros? Maybe even the Time Lords themselves? I personally can’t wait to find out.

  • The External Force that will bring all three Doctors together brand new foe. This theory supports the trend of Moffat’s Doctor Who, where he has showcased a knack of coming up with new and compelling antagonist/s when given the opportunity to do so.

  • The majority of the Day of the Doctor will take place on Gallifey. Again, this theory comes from the fact that the War Doctor cannot exist beyond the Time War.

And that concludes our 50th anniversary preview. I’m sure all you Whovians reading this are just as excited as me that the time has finally come!

Check back in on Bag and Bored tomorrow for a full in-depth review of the Day of the Doctor. Where I’ll most probably have to apologize for a theory or two. Until then, don’t forget to not to blink! Otherwise you might miss something!
